Colleen McEachran

Colleen McEachran MSW, RSW

Colleen is a registered social worker, having earned her BA (Psychology), BSW, and MSW degrees from the University of British Columbia (Vancouver).  Since graduating, she has worked for over 20 years as a counsellor in the health care field, and in private practice.

As a clinical social worker, Colleen has worked with individuals and families facing serious and often life-threatening health challenges.  One of her areas of expertise is that of effective communication (with children and/or adults) when a family is experiencing a crisis (health, divorce, addiction, etc.) or the anticipated death of a loved one.  In her private practice, Colleen has also worked with individuals and families.  Particular areas of interest, in addition to general counselling, include women in life transitions (marriage, motherhood, divorce, menopause, etc.), mindfulness and addiction (food, alcohol, shopping, hoarding, etc.), and anxiety, depression, and grief (historical, anticipatory, and bereavement).

In addition to her academic and professional background, Colleen’s clinical counselling skills are informed by training in both MBSR (mindfulness-based stress reduction), and EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing).  These two approaches used together have been shown through research to work very effectively and often more efficiently than using talk therapy alone.  Colleen says of her counselling approach:  “Clients bring their expertise and insight regarding the difficulties they face, and I bring my therapeutic training and experience, and together we work to alleviate the issues that challenge them.  I encourage clients to ask questions, at any time, regarding my approach or technique — I am always more than happy to discuss these, and to modify them when necessary.”

Colleen has lived in Vernon for 20 years, and she is the mother of two sons who are currently attending university.  Her life is further enriched by extended family, friends and hobbies, and she looks forward to her new role as part of the Vernon Active Health team!
